We have a long term patient here at the hospital with a difficult family situation and an even more complicated health situation. The patient has developmental delays and is nonverbal and unable to communicate. Sam tirelessly went in and out of this patient's room between other patient rooms throughout the night constantly re-positioning, providing oral care, giving pain medications, cleaning the patient, performing the patient's first shower, and throughout the whole time gently explaining every intervention to the patient. From the beginning of the shift when Sam first got this patient to the end, the patient was unrecognizable with freshly brushed, clean hair and a smile. It is easy to overlook nonverbal or confused patients since they are unable to advocate for themselves but Sam went above and beyond and even further to ensure this patient had the best possible night of her entire hospital stay. Sam is an excellent bedside nurse and patient advocate. I am proud to work alongside such a wonderful nurse.
