Flying alone to a new city because your father has to have emergency surgery is stressful. Hearing he has been diagnosed with cancer is even more stressful. Thankfully, we had the benefit of having Sam as our nurse for multiple days throughout his extended stay. Sam has been nothing short of phenomenal. Not only has she managed my dad's pain, stayed on top of his other medications and answered all of his/my questions, she has also helped to keep us both in good spirits throughout these trying times. She laughed at his bad jokes and worse singing, encouraged him to keep taking walks, and stayed longer in the room to reassure us after providing any care. I found myself getting excited when she said she would be back the next day as his nurse again. It is almost inconceivable to be excited while in a hospital facing a tough diagnosis, but I felt confident that with Sam there my dad would get the best possible care and we both felt listened to and heard. I'm thankful for how Sam treated us as people, not just patients, and she is a true DAISY Nurse.
