Samantha (Sami) Duffy, RN
Today we recognize Sami for her contributions to addressing the strategic priorities of the organization and for supporting our Sentara Cultural Attributes, specifically "We Exist for Our Consumers," by building strong relationships through honesty, integrity, and authenticity.
Nurse Sami should also be recognized for her initiative, advocacy, and outstanding patient-centered care.
Sami took the initiative to make something happen that our family had been hoping for—a long-awaited shower for our mom. What stood out most was her thoughtful problem-solving. She recognized that my mother needed the appropriate equipment to shower safely, identified that a Sara Stedy lift was needed, and requested one. Surprisingly, this had never been mentioned or addressed by anyone else.
Her actions demonstrated not only strong clinical judgment, but also genuine compassion and a deep respect for my mother's dignity.
Sami gathered everything we needed to help bathe my mother and then returned to assist us in safely transferring her back to bed. Together, we worked seamlessly as a team to provide my mom with an experience that restored not only her comfort but also her sense of dignity.
It may have seemed like a simple act, but to our family it meant everything. Sami saw a need, advocated for her patient, found a solution, and ensured it happened.
Her initiative, leadership, compassion, and unwavering commitment to patient-centered care exemplify the true spirit of the DAISY Award. She is truly deserving of this recognition.
