In December Samantha was caring for an 80 year old female patient, admitted for SIRS and COPD. On December 4th the patient was ordered a dose of vancomycin IV. The patient had several antibiotic allergies, so Sam decided to stay with her while the medication began infusing. Shortly thereafter the patient experienced acute shortness of breath, a change in her level of consciousness and atrial fibrillation with a RVR. Sam turned off the antibiotic, suspecting an anaphylactic reaction, and activated the rapid response team. During the event Sam was at the bedside holding her patient's hand and explaining what was happening. When the patient woke up she was in ICU and intubated. Concerned, Sam visited her to provide comfort. In January Sam was mentioned in 5 North Press Ganey survey by this patient. In a follow up phone call, the patient credits her survival of this terrifying event to Sam, stating "if she hadn't been with me I wouldn't be here. She treated me like I was her mother. She made the extra effort to make sure I was okay. She is a very special nurse and I will never forget her!"
