October 2013 Honoree
samantha sirvydas, RN, BSN
Samantha had been providing care to a cancer patient who is well known to the floor nurses and she had established a good working relationship with him. In conversation, she learned that this hospitalization was going to cause him to miss his daughter's high school graduation, which was coming up in just a few days. Samantha brought this information to the discharge planner and the physician, which began a series of conversations and plans to allow the patient to leave the hospital for a few hours to attend his daughter's graduation, which he did a few days later. The patient was very grateful for this. He returned to the floor, where he remained hospitalized for days afterwards. Samantha, a new grad with her limited nursing experience, refreshingly demonstrated what nursing care is all about and what others strive to provide every day.
Thank you, Samantha, for your exceptional compassion, advocacy, and dedication to your patients. You truly make a difference.
