She helped with lactation, pain control, personal care, and just lending an ear to listen to me. My hospitalization was a positive experience, thanks to her.
In January, I gave birth by cesarean section to a 10 lb. 4 oz baby boy named N. While I was pregnant, genetic testing showed a 97.6% chance that the baby would have Trisomy 21. I decided to continue with my pregnancy despite these results. At N’s birth, there were some complications. His blood glucose read 30 and his oxygenation was low. He was rushed to the Intensive Care Nursery (ICN) and placed on high flow oxygen. While this was happening, I was admitted to the Maternity floor, but I was in no condition to see N at that time. The next morning, a woman named Samantha introduced herself and informed me she would be my nurse. I vividly remember that day being extremely difficult for me both emotionally and physically. Samantha was very empathetic to my postpartum needs. She helped me out of bed and assisted me with washing up so I could visit my son in the ICN. Samantha went above and beyond in an effort to make things easier for me that day, even escorting me down in a wheelchair to the ICN. As a new mom, I was overwhelmed, and Samantha became a great support person for me. She helped with lactation, pain control, personal care, and just lending an ear to listen to me. My hospitalization was a positive experience, thanks to her. Samantha has the knowledge, skills, and compassion that make her an essential nurse to have within the Maternity department. N was in the ICN for 37 days. During that time, Samantha would often see me in the hospital and would go out of her way to ask how I was doing. She showed concern for me and also for the well-being of N. She has made a significant impact on my postpartum recovery.
