There is not just one time, but many I can recall, where Sam impacted a family's most sacred moment. Just today, I found her consoling a family in her office by providing them with privacy, comfort, and information regarding their child's care. And last weekend, Sam took it upon herself to work with the adult daughter of a patient who had recently had three admissions. Together they formulated a plan for working with Case Management, physicians and other ancillary staff to provide the patient and family the resources needed for a successful discharge. The daughter was tearful when she stated to me that Sam was an angel, a God-send and that she didn't know what she would have done without her assistance. She had tried and failed, three times to help her mother, but simply did not know how.
Sam shows Respectful Compassion daily, to her patients, families, and also to her staff. She is constantly assisting her coworkers. She is also very responsible with her staff, offering to assist units with greater need, often as a charge nurse, taking on an assignment of her own for the sake of a sister unit. I know that I can always count on Sam for Deep Interdependence. She always goes the extra mile and is the first person to take on additional work for the sake of others.
We all have our ups and downs, but Sam is passionate about her work, and the work of her teammates. She brings her best every day and when someone else may not be at their best, she works with them to make things better. She has a "can-do" attitude and often does whatever it takes to get the job done. She often sacrifices to assist other units and displays Responsible Stewardship by sharing resources when it may be more cost-effective than adding additional resources. I am so grateful to work with her and to be able to witness her kindness and compassion for others.
