Samantha is truly in the right profession, and it was evident in her interactions with my dad.
I brought my dad to the Memorial Regional Medical Center emergency room due to complaints of abdominal pain and difficulty getting a deep breath. The EMTs who took him into the room were so personable and explained everything as they went. My dad’s nurse arrived shortly after, and her name is Samantha Wiersberg. The moment Samantha arrived in the room, she had a smile on her face that I could tell put my dad at ease.
When I think about the DAISY Award and all that it represents, I knew I needed to submit one to recognize Samantha. Samantha shared with us that she graduated from nursing school last December, but you would never have known this by her confidence, skills, interactions, and comfort in her communication.
I decided I would share about Samantha using the Bon Secours values:
Respect:
Samantha never addressed my dad without using “Mr.” no matter how many times she came and went from the room. She recognized his age and that any exposure during needed exams or treatments may be uncomfortable for him, so she asked if we would step out of the room while she supported him with obtaining a specimen collection. When she was done, she made it a priority to alert us in the waiting room so we could return and support him.
Compassion:
Samantha was extremely compassionate to my dad. She did not do anything without narrating the care first. She made sure he was comfortable and warm, and she made it a priority to ensure he was not in any pain.
Quality:
Samantha met all of my expectations and those of my dad and family members. She made it a priority to wash her hands upon entry and exit, verify that my dad had the proper armband, and always, 100% of the time, completed her verification before she administered any medications and when she was preparing to draw labs. Samantha requested my dad to state his name and date of birth prior to his lab draws and again when labeling them.
The above is just a small sampling of what my dad experienced in the care of Samantha and the team. She truly built a relationship with him that allowed him to relax and be calm. Even though I was present in the room, she made him the priority.
Samantha is truly in the right profession, and it was evident in her interactions with my dad. Our patients in the emergency room are extremely fortunate to have Samantha as their nurse, and I am extremely grateful for the care she provided to my dad.
