I had surgery to fix my bladder and a hernia, but I was rushed to the OR because I had an emergency. My intestines were twisted. The surgeon had to untwist them, cut the dead part of the intestines, and sew them back together. Once I was on the 5th North floor for post-op, I was in extreme excruciating pain, and it was uncontrollable. The nurses were trying to do their best, but it was only when nurse Sammy Case came and checked on me every hour my pain was controlled, and he passed the information to the next nurse to make sure that I was not in pain. I was relieved to see there were people who cared and loved their job. Not only did nurse Sam make sure I was not in pain and got my medication, but he also trained the students before he asked me respectfully if it was ok for him to take the foley out or if I would prefer a female. I said it’s ok that you take the foley out; I don’t mind. I thought it was important that the new nurses learn, and there are not that many people who care to teach who really impress me. Also, he asked if it was ok for another incoming nurse practice to put the IV, and I said okay because he noticed that the IV that I had had for a whole week was not good anymore because my skin was irritated and the fluids were coming out. It’s amazing to see how well nurse Sam cares for his patients and keeps the training going at NWTHS.
