His consideration and empathy were unmistakable early on once he realized my dad was receiving bad results from his scheduled colonoscopy.
It has been roughly a year since Sam helped my dad, mom, and me through one of the most difficult of their 50 years together. His consideration and empathy were unmistakable early on once he realized my dad was receiving bad results from his scheduled colonoscopy. There was an obvious translation issue between my upset mom, groggy dad, and the physician. Sam immediately fetched me from the waiting room so I could listen to the diagnosis (Integrity). Sam even brought my mother a chair and made sure the curtain was closed to ensure privacy during his distressing conversation (Respect). Sam’s consideration continued throughout that long afternoon and into the evening when he streamlined lab tests the same day to avoid my parents having to make an additional 50-mile roundtrip to the hospital. He physically escorted the three of us downstairs to the lab, as well as, sat with us to make sure we understood the process and timing of valid lab tests (Commitment). After hearing my dad was diabetic, Sam directed me to the café to get snacks as we were not prepared for such a lengthy visit (Excellence). Last, but not certainly not least, as Sam’s shift was ending he personally transitioned our care to a trusting peer of his and instructed said associate “take care of these folks” (Advocacy). Sam’s consideration was not only professional, but humane and personal. As mentioned previously, it has been about a year since Sam went above and beyond to help my parents and I still think about his efforts every couple of days. Sam deserves to be recognized . . .
