Samuel Hagan, LPN
Samuel Hagan embodies the heart of compassionate care and the VA's mission. Recently, while floated to the Podiatry Clinic, Sam encountered a Veteran who arrived in distress, soiled, uncomfortable, and in urgent need of assistance. Without hesitation, Sam gathered supplies from his clinic and Urology and took it upon himself to clean the Veteran thoroughly and respectfully. His actions ensured the Veteran left not only physically cared for but also emotionally uplifted and dignified. This is just one example of the extraordinary care Sam provides every day.
Sam is frequently and specifically requested by name on our inpatient units because of his personal touch, deep compassion, and expert-level care. Veterans and their families know they can count on him not just for clinical excellence but for genuine human connection. He has built strong, personal relationships with many Veterans and their loved ones, often serving as a trusted and familiar face during difficult times.
Sam goes far beyond his job description. He will walk a Veteran to their car without hesitation, ensuring their safety and comfort. He keeps clothing and food on hand for those in need, always prepared to meet Veterans where they are. He even coordinates appointments across departments to minimize travel and reduce the burden on Veterans, saving them unnecessary miles and days on the road.
Veterans often ask me, "Do you know Sam in the Urology Clinic?" during my encounters with them in our clinic, and Sam never fails to come down and greet them personally. His presence is a source of comfort and reassurance. There is not a Veteran who leaves his care untouched by his kindness and dedication.
Sam doesn't just represent the VA's core values; he lives them. His loyalty, compassion, and initiative surpass all expectations. He is a true advocate for our Veterans and a shining example of what this award stands for. He doesn’t just meet the standard — he is the standard. No one is more deserving of the DAISY Award than Samuel Hagan.
