We have had a patient on our unit for a while who is Spanish speaking. I have seen and heard several nurses, PCTs, Physicians, etc. utilize the Globo Translator with the patient. On this particular day, Sam was orienting a GN to use the Globo Translator to ensure proper communication with the patient. Sam not only explained everything he was doing and answered all questions, and he also engaged in small talk through the translator with the patient. Speaking to the patient about the storms and the hail we had the night before. Asking the patient what he likes to do outside of the hospital and making sure to connect with the patient on a more personal level. Did this take a little extra time on the nurse's part? Yes, it did, but Sam gladly did it, not knowing the conversation could be overheard. It’s the small things that he does daily that make a huge difference in the lives of our patients. I know this nurse did not do this for recognition, but I definitely think this nurse is a wonderful role model to all nurses daily.
