Sandy was exceptionally compassionate and empathetic towards the patient and I could see how the patient felt very comforted by her presence and her care.
I went into UPMC Carlisle to see a patient of mine that had been having temperature spikes earlier in the evening. Shortly after I arrived to her room, her night RN, Sandy, arrived and I introduced myself. I explained I wanted to look the patient over and get a better idea as to what would be causing the fevers. Sandy was very helpful and caring to the patient as we got her out of the chair and into her bed. I explained that I was going to do a wound/dressing change and further assess the wound. Sandy went and got me supplies as well as some premedication for the patient's discomfort. Each time the patient had a question, she would look at Sandy to see what her response would be. At times, Sandy would bend down and grab her patient's hand and tell her she was going to be ok. During the dressing change, Sandy distracted the patient by talking about a variety of things and the patient was very responsive and engaged with Sandy and not with what I was doing. I thanked Sandy and left for the night. The following day, the patient and her spouse talked about Sandy and how much they liked her caring manner and that special touch gave the patient something to look forward to. I expressed to the patient and her spouse that I witnessed the same the night prior and that not only was she very helpful to me, but she also was exceptionally compassionate and empathetic towards the patient and that I could see how the patient felt very comforted by her presence and her care. The patient even expressed to me that Sandy made her feel safe and she missed the nights when Sandy was not working. Her spouse noted that what Sandy brings to her patients is something that you can't teach to people, but one is very fortunate when you are the recipient of such interaction. I would agree 100%!
