Sandy went above and beyond for a patient's wife after he passed away. The patient was on end-of-life care on our unit and his wife was not able to be with the patient when he passed. The next 2 days I'm sure the wife was in shock and grieving.
The wife spoke to Sandy about her request for an autopsy. Sandy compassionately listened to the wife and explained the process. Because of the number of hours that had already passed, the timeline was very short to make this happen. Sandy called pathology to see if it was possible and what needed to be done. Sandy was in constant communication with the wife explaining each step that needed to be completed. Sandy met the wife in the lobby to have her sign consent for the autopsy. Sandy then had to coordinate a physician signature for the autopsy. The physician was in surgery and Sandy met the physician in Post Op to get the signature.
The tireless efforts of Sandy show her commitment to patients and their families. The wife was appreciative of Sandy's communication and making sure she understood the process. The autopsy happened because of Sandy's endless efforts. Sandy knew this was what the wife needed for closure and made sure it happened. I'm not able to convey how proud I am to work with someone with this much compassion, empathy and who embodies customer obsession. Sandy is an extraordinary nurse.
