My father had already been admitted to the ED for several hours when Sandra started her shift. She immediately recognized that it was my father’s 88th birthday. In addition to wishing him a sincere happy birthday, she acknowledged that this was not a fun way to spend his special day. Sandra’s compassion was unwavering, from the warmed blankets to the time and care she took to make him comfortable. The respect and dignity with which she treated my father were noticed and appreciated with every interaction. She made sure that I felt comfortable stepping away to grab food for myself. Sandra clearly communicated the steps she was taking in advocating for a quicker transfer to a floor bed and even arranged to have him moved to an actual bed in the ED so he could rest more comfortably. She proactively and promptly addressed his pain to reduce his suffering. Sandra routinely demonstrated DAISY Award Values in the outstanding care she provided my father today. Every bit of effort is highly appreciated!
