I would like to nominate NICU nurse Sandra Ruela for a DAISY award for her outstanding compassionate care during the passing of her primary patient. Sandra took on T, who was born at just 25 weeks gestation, as her primary patient. For several months, she cared for him throughout numerous challenging nights. She built a trusting relationship with T and his parents, helping them to understand their son's challenges, teaching them step-by-step how to care for him and encouraging the bond between child and parents. Unexpectedly T's condition worsened, and he experienced a bowel injury that was not compatible with life. Sandra was able to be there for T on his last night delivering the most compassionate, thorough and expert nursing care that he needed to make sure he didn't suffer during his passing. Sandra spent all night with his parents at his bedside making sure they were involved in all of his last moments. She delicately but directly explained the hard truths of what each decline meant for their son with grace and compassion. Sandra held T's mother's hand as she and her husband made the choice to withdraw care and give a companionate release to their son. Sandra stayed by T's side during his passing, never wavering in her grace and strength. In the NICU your patient can't verbalize the gratitude they have for their nurse's dedication and expertise, but I can. Sandra showed the utmost professionalism on the most difficult of nights and I am honored to work alongside her.
