I recently had a simple procedure done at OSF and everyone treated me very well, but there was a nurse who went out of her way to talk to me about a subject that is very hard to talk about. She did it with great kindness and understanding, and I will not forget her advice, kind words, and compassion. I hope you recognize what a great employee you have in her being a part of your hospital. Her name is Sandra Thomma.
*****
Sandy Thomma volunteered to care for a patient who arrived for same day surgery with a strong odor and poor hygiene. Knowing this could impact his surgical risk, Sandy volunteered to shower the gentleman which she did with kindness and compassion. After the shower, Sandy realized the gentleman's feet required special attention. She filled a basin, soaked his feet, and provided exceptional foot care. When he left for surgery, Sandy realized his well-worn sneakers were a source of the odor and arranged for her husband to purchase and deliver a new pair of shoes for her patient. Sandy demonstrated the spirit of Servant Leadership in caring for her patient, much in the same way our Savior washed the feet of His disciples. The Sisters would be proud!
