Granny was immediately comfortable with Sandy and was talking to her about anything and everything under the sun.
As a caregiver for your 95-year-old grandmother, you never want to hear the news that we need to take her to the hospital. We arrived at Bethesda around 2:00 am and got Granny all settled in. We were able to sleep for a few hours and then it was the morning shift. In walked Sandy.
Granny was immediately comfortable with Sandy and was talking to her about anything and everything under the sun. Sandy was even taking care of me and making sure I was eating and getting rest. Our family was taking turns sitting with Granny and everyone could not say enough about Sandy. I will say that Granny was not an easy patient: she was a fiery redhead that was going to tell you exactly what is wrong and why it was wrong. The best was that Sandy never let that bother her. She would say “Well how can I help” or “How can I make this better?” She was a blessing when we were all worried about Granny.
On the next day, Sandy even let my young children into Granny’s room, so they could read to her and give hugs. Now don't get her in trouble! I really didn't give her an option and just asked for 5 minutes, and well, she gave us 20. On her last shift, she came in to say goodbye to Granny and I think the conversation lasted about 10 minutes. They both gave each other a hug and some advice on life and Sandy told her to keep taking care of her family just like she has been all these years. After we returned home, Granny was still talking about Sandy and how sweet she was, and what an amazing nurse she is. She was the best possible nurse I could have asked for to take care of the women that had taken care of me for so many years. She not only has the characteristics of an exceptional nurse but is a truly wonderful human who cares about others. Without a doubt in my mind, she is one of the best in the business. Thank you for all the love and care you gave to our family, Sandy - we will never forget this or you.
