She immediately agreed with the plan, escalated the solution to her leadership, got approval, and provided a smooth handoff to the next shift lead.
Our medical facility was undergoing water/power maintenance which was impacting the ability to have weight/bili follow ups with newborns over the weekend. A 4-day old newborn was admitted to the MSU for hyperbilirubinemia requiring phototherapy, and the care team needed to facilitate 24 hour follow up for the infant as standard of care for the potential high risk nature of the condition. Normally, this is performed in the Mother Baby Unit over the weekend. However, they would be unable to accommodate. As the provider for this patient, I called Lt. Sara Stover, who was the Charge nurse for the day on the MSU, to see if it was possible to bring this patient back for a lab draw over the weekend. She immediately agreed with the plan, escalated the solution to her leadership, got approval, and provided a smooth handoff to the next shift lead. She was able to go outside the normal standard practice at our facility to ensure the patient had the proper standard of care that is deserved. The medical providers and the parents are incredibly grateful for Lt. Stover's willingness to problem-solve and improvise to make sure the patient is put first above all else. Lt Stover is setting an excellent example of leadership and compassionate care. She is an Extraordinary Nurse and active-duty Air Force member, she is a true DAISY Nurse.
