When I was first admitted to Spartanburg Hospital for Restorative Care for rehab, I had developed some medical conditions that delayed by rehab. I had almost no mobilization and was bedridden. My first weekend at SHRC, Sara along with CNA, Elaine Jones, bathed me in bed from head to toe. She later teased me by saying, "We stripped you down, scrubbed you from head to toe, then lotioned you and powdered you up. You smelled so pretty afterwards." This is just a small example of how she cared for me above and beyond her duties as a healthcare giver. She always comes in with the happiest disposition, extending care and compassion every time she walks in the room. She always made me feel as if my need/care mattered and not as if I was a bother or interruption to what she was doing. She not only treated me with tender love and care, she extended that same caring attitude to my daughter. This was a hard time for my daughter having to see me in an altered state of mind. Someone made the comment that my behavior was normal for someone with dementia. This upset my daughter because I do not have dementia. My daughter constantly repeated that I was not your typical 93-year old and asked that they not treat me as if I was. Sara took time to listen to my daughter and to look at photos and videos of me prior to surgery. Sara encouraged me; pushing me along at times. She loved on me, nursed me, but she "cared" for me above and beyond her medical duties. She hugged and comforted my daughter when emotions got the best of her. She never gave up on me. I looked forward to when Sara was working because I knew not only would I receive awesome nursing skills from her, but extra care and a lot of pampering!
