Through compassionate listening, caring, and reassurance, Sara was able to de-escalate the situation so the patient could receive the care they required.
One morning, Sara and I responded to a patient in the parking lot.  The patient was in considerable psychological distress, and the situation could have easily escalated and turned into a situation that would severely compromise the safety of both the patient and staff.  Sara quickly assessed the situation and approached the patient.  Through compassionate listening, caring, and reassurance, Sara was able to de-escalate the situation so the patient could receive the care they required.  Sara consistently cares for patients in a manner that reflects the very best that nursing has to offer.  During the three years that I have worked with her, I have remained in constant admiration of her ability to care for patients in a fast-paced, stressful environment.  Without hesitation, I would gladly have Sara care for any of my loved ones.  I wholeheartedly nominate Sara Hedrick for this award as she embodies the standards, ideals, and philosophy of the DAISY Award.

Sara was able to verbally de-escalate a patient who arrived at the Carroll ED parking lot with a suicide attempt. Sara reacted in a compassionate and non-threatening way that earned the patient's trust. Sara was able to approach the patient and get her to remove herself from the railing out front of the hospital retaining wall. Sara was a true life-saver that day, and without her, this patient may have lost their life.
