My son's Pediatrician sent us to the Pediatric Emergency Department. Initially, I thought he had some sort of gastroenteritis, but they were concerned other illnesses could be the cause of his vomiting, fussiness, and lethargy.
This is our first child, so as anxious new parents my anxiety was extremely heightened. In addition to the stress of the illness, we are new to Richmond, have no family here and my husband is traveling for work.
The second we walked through the door Sara's compassion and excellent clinical skills gave me a sense of peace. I knew we were safe and in good hands. We had to go through multiple diagnostic tests, including an IV and ultrasound in which Sara was by my side not only providing exceptional care to my child but also to me!
After the diagnosis of intussusception and learning what procedure would be done, Sara was there. She reassured me and answered questions I didn't know I had. Her communication was not only clear and effective, but it was sincere and kind. She was so understanding that this was one of the scariest times in my life and was my support system.
When it was time for the procedure, Sara stood by me as I comforted my crying child. She held my hand and helped remind me to focus on providing comfort to me. While I comforted him and wiped his tears, Sara comforted me and wiped mine.
I believe that this is what embodies a truly extraordinary nurse! Not only was Sara clinically excellent, but her compassion and advocacy set her apart from others. We did not feel like just another patient to Sara, we felt like her family. Sara made a real impact on not only our hospitalization but on our lives. I cannot thank her enough for being a nurse, it is clear that this is her calling.
