Sara McNamee is always so caring and kind to her patients. She has the nickname from one anesthesiologist of "Sister Sara" because she always does the right thing and is just such a wonderful person and advocate for her patients. She is a team player and goes above and beyond what is expected. We are so lucky to have her.
Last week there was an in-house patient that came to pre-op in his bed for wound care. All the nurses knew him because he has had the procedure done before. Once he was settled, his family came in at his bedside. He was agitated, restless and this made the family anxious and tense. His granddaughter started singing hymns to him and he sang along and calmed down and the family began to relax too.
Time passed and he was still waiting for his surgery and the family had to leave. Once they left, he became agitated and restless again and was calling out. Sara went to his bedside and spoke with him. She then started singing old hymns with him and he began to sing along and calm down. They continued singing hymns for over an hour. Luckily, it was a Friday afternoon, the rush of surgery patients was over, and the unit was now slow so she could take the time to do this. This wasn't her assigned patient, but Sara wanted to make him comfortable and at ease and stayed with him singing.
The OR called and said they would be out shortly, so Sara punched out to end her shift and went back to Pre-Op to gather her belongings. The OR hadn't come yet. The other 2 RNs there were busy with another patient. Sara could see that the gentleman was getting restless again and calling out. She went back to his bedside and started singing with him again to calm him down until the OR came for him - 30 minutes later, on her own time. We are so fortunate she works with us and BayCare is very fortunate to have her.
