Hospitalized in a city I know no one a patient time in the room can go by extremely slow. As TV is my only friend but this nurse was assigned to my care for the day. So this is day four of the hospitalization just when I thought my day would be another field with game shows and judges I was instead fortunate enough to have her as a nurse. A nurse who did not rush in and out of my room, instead I had conversations and engaged in talking about a host of subjects. All highlighted by intelligent thoughts. I do not believe many people can understand what it is like to sit in the hospital room hour after hour. Seeing the physicians on his round for two-minute appointments, a CNA for five minutes as she took vitals, of my RN who usually administered medications and left. But much to my delight this nurse took those few extra minutes just talking to me. It was not important how long or what the conversation was about. What made my day was the time she spent with me just talking; it made my day. Let me repeat that it made my day. You cannot imagine how conversations can change the day of a patient such as myself. Nurses who understand that medication is not the only thing that makes a patient better, have no place in medicine. My talk with this nurse today had a profound effect on me, her kindness and professionalism that were evident that very first time. I was introduced to her those five or 10 extra minutes she stayed in my room to talk, spoke volumes about her ability to understand that mental fitness is just as important as physical. By just allowing me to vent about my career she did more for me than she will ever know. More nurses should take a page from Sara's book. A little extra time with your patient, you may be the only visitor they have had since they were hospitalized like me.
