This nurse’s patient’s CT scan results showed high-grade mechanical Small Bowel Obstruction. She came on shift the next day and paged the attending about it. She was told to wait for a GI/surgery recommendation. The next day, GI/surgery signed off on the care, saying they assessed the patient, who had just had gastroparesis. This nurse then paged the attending physician again. She was told to wait for more GI/surgery recommendation. Finally, this nurse did not stop here, she paged the surgeon who already signed off on the case and challenged the team’s plan based on CT scan results. She was then told that, apparently, they had not seen the CT scan results. An hour later, the patient was taken for emergency surgery. Sara Weaver saved this patient’s life by applying her knowledge and respectfully challenging the doctor’s recommendations.
