I have never had another nurse who got such frequent and positive reactions from patients.
Sarah truly embodies what it means to be a kind, caring, and compassionate nurse. She persistently goes above and beyond for her patients - ensuring they are not only well cared for but feel supported emotionally and psychologically when dealing with serious illness. At least once per day, when I have clinic after I see a patient in follow-up, they will ask to see Sarah so they can give her a hug because of how much of a difference she has made in their lives! I have never had another nurse who got such frequent and positive reactions from patients. A good example illustrates this well: One afternoon around 5 pm, when the office was closing, I had a patient call the office complaining of severe bladder pain due to an occluded catheter. Turned out the patient was actually in the hospital radiology waiting room in the next building over, undergoing a CT scan for a planned operation the next day. Rather than leaving along with the rest of her colleagues, Sarah grabbed the necessary supplies and jumped into action. She walked from the clinic over to the hospital radiology area, walked down several hallways (where she had never been before) until she eventually found the patient, and right then and there proceeded to irrigate the patient's catheter, relieving a clot obstruction and giving them immediate relief. To this day, that patient still reminds me of this simple act of kindness that made such a huge difference in their comfort. I think there are only a few people who would have taken the initiative to seek out the patient's location rather than waiting for them to come to her or leaving for the evening because our office was already closed. Sarah is a shining example of the best of what nurses can be and deserves strong consideration for the DAISY Award.
