Sarah DiBari was the Registered Nurse assigned to care for my father-in-law during his stay on IOD in August. Due to COVID, one visitor was allowed each day and only one person. Even as a staff Nurse at BWH, I was not allowed to "sneak up" and check on my father-in-law. His transition quickly from an active 72-year-old male to a confused, agitated, and delirious patient took us all by complete surprise. His diagnosis as I write this remains not 100% confirmed.
Sarah cared for him with the utmost professionalism, kindness, and knowledgeable care. She demonstrated what it is to be an exceptional Brigham Nurse. Sarah included family in planning, listened attentively to what we were saying, advocated tirelessly for P's best interests, included Pain and Palliative Care to help navigate his delirium, and future care needs. She then proceeded to, on her way out, seek me out to inform me of the next steps, plans, goals, and reinforce that she would be back the next day to care for P. As a Nurse myself during COVID with a loud one in my hospital, it was incredibly difficult not to be able to see my father-in-law. With Sarah, I never had to worry. She always made sure we were included and felt in touch even while out of touch. She played checkers with him, listened when he cried, and skillfully put his family at ease. His transition from a busy "Grampy" to hospice was made that much easier because of Sarah. We cannot thank her enough.
