Recently, we unfortunately received a life-threatening diagnosis on a patient of ours who was previously extremely healthy with very few medical conditions. This news was earth-shattering for the patient and her spouse. I delivered the news and told her that we would work expediently to get her the care that she needed. Sarah, my RN, then took the reins and worked to get this patient into U of M quickly, talking her through every step of the process. She would check on her regularly with a phone call to see how she was doing, if she understood where she was supposed to be, and ensure that she made the appointments, understood the dialogue, and was comfortable with the next steps. I didn't ask Sarah to do this, she recognized that this is what the patient needed in the moment to help her navigate the gravity of the situation. On Sarah's most recent phone call with the patient, the patient thanked her multiple times, for all that she had done to navigate the system for her, with obvious tears of gratitude. After the phone call was complete, I reminded Sarah that this patient's experience of kindness and compassion was all Sarah's doing. She eased this extremely difficult path for the patient, and the patient will forever remember this with gratitude. She changed the course of this patient's care plan and her experience of our health system during a devastating time in this patient's life. If all of us could act with half the compassion that Sarah extends to her patients, Medicine would be a better place. She is the epitome of a Nurse, and I am grateful for her.
