I am a nurse at SHH, but I am sharing this experience as a patient. My husband and I were patiently awaiting my induction date when my water broke spontaneously overnight 36 hours before we were to go in. My older son was born just 2 hours after my water broke, so we got to the hospital as quickly as possible anticipating a speedy delivery. Sarah was halfway through an overnight shift when we came in and she admitted me at 1 am. I'll spare all of the details, but when Sarah came back for her next shift at 7 pm, I was still in labor, determined to do it without pain medication, and soon, I sincerely felt like I was starting to lose my mind. Sarah was invaluable. She coached my husband on how to help me through contractions, she followed me from the bed to the sling, to the tub and back again as I tried every method of natural pain relief. She encouraged me, supported me, and more than once took my face into her hands to look me in the eyes and tell me that I could do this. She was my biggest cheerleader during some of the longest hours of my life. Eventually, we were joined by a sweet baby boy at 11:02 pm. Sarah was everything I aspire to be in my own nursing career. She was funny and upbeat. She was kind, compassionate and caring. She advocated for me when I was in too much pain to advocate for myself. She supported me, encouraged me, and she held me when I quite literally couldn't hold myself up anymore. Baby W is almost three months old, and it still brings tears to my eyes to think about what an incredibly positive birth experience I had. The Women and Infants department is tremendously blessed to have Sarah on their team, and so is every mother who is lucky enough to be a patient of hers.
