Dr. Sarah Hoffman’s research, teaching, and service reflect a commitment to better understanding and teaching social determinants in health.
Dr. Sarah Hoffman reflects a dynamic commitment to social justice and leadership in understanding social determinants of health through her research, teaching, and service.

In research, Hoffman identifies determinants and consequences of trauma resulting from torture or war and is working to develop and implement interventions effective in disrupting the effects of trauma. Sarah’s commitment has been recognized with funding from the Grant-In-Aid and the Building Interdisciplinary Careers in Women’s Health (BIRCWH) because her research gives voice to the health needs of families and addresses the impact of trauma on these families. Her qualitative approach highlights the perspectives of this group of people who are at high risk of poor health outcomes related to their trauma and resettlement. Hoffman was invited to share her perspectives at the iCOMOS conference in Thailand as a panel member discussing ‘Gender and Migration: The unique intersections between gender, health, and war’. Anyone who has the privilege of working with Sarah in research readily sees how she gently and conscientiously gives voice to the stories of trauma and survival. Her commitment to better understanding social determinants of health in this population is unmistakable.

In teaching and mentorship, Hoffman challenges students to consider the social and political structures that surround and influence individuals and communities. Hoffman works with students to identify and articulate the power imbalances that are typical in these relationships and the resulting potential impact on health. Hoffman encourages both graduate and undergraduate students to reflect on how they as nurses are positioned within these relationships. Her commitment to teaching students the consequential impact of social determinants is evident in her coursework and mentoring.

In service, Hoffman aims to advocate for and defend policies and spaces, which promote the security, agency, and resilience of migrant and refugee women. Within the School of Nursing she serves on the School of Nursing Diversity and Inclusivity Committee, yet another venue that reflects her commitment to social determinants of health.

In summary, Dr. Sarah Hoffman’s research, teaching, and service reflect a commitment to better understanding and teaching social determinants in health. She is an excellent example of someone who walks the talk and translates the message of social justice to others.
