Although Sarah's nursing expertise stretches far beyond this story, I would like to highlight her work with a chronically-ill child that is frequently admitted to our unit. Sarah has cared for this child and his parents and three older brothers throughout his illness. Recently, the medical team felt he would not survive past this admission. Sarah graciously accepted when the family requested she care for their dying son.
Sarah's professional and easygoing demeanor helped put the family at ease as they met with numerous specialists. She spent the time to sit and play with each brother, who knew her by name, giving them purpose as they processed losing their little brother. From wagon races to syringe shooting to fake mustaches, Sarah laughed and smiled with the siblings to remind them that they were not alone as their family struggled.
Sarah is a true example of a calm presence for a family in need while maintaining her professional nurse role as a caregiver.
