I had my beautiful baby boy at 28 weeks. 12 weeks early by emergency c-section. This was an extremely stressful and intimidating time as we entered new territory of the NICU. The unknown is always scary and without the compassion and care of a very special lady, we would not have survived the NICU as well as we did. Our baby was in care for 85 days. 85 days of leaving my baby every day. This is where we met Sarah King.
Sarah was one of many nurses our baby had during his stay. They were all wonderful but Sarah stood out in such a way we will never forget her. She has a passion for what she does and it is seen in everything she does. I felt as if I was leaving my son in the care of a close sister when I had to be away, all because of Sarah's love for her patients. She was straightforward when I needed information and she was compassionate when I needed comfort and she was happy when I needed a laugh. Her care for my son was beyond exceptional. She let me know everything that was going on before it happened and walked me through each step of care my son was receiving.
I myself had some strenuous medical issues after delivery. Sarah and I shared many tears as she let me tell her what was going on and she sympathized with me, cried with me, and reassured me of all the great blessings that were to come.
I believe the care of babies is a very hard and stressful job. I've seen it first hand. Sarah has a servants heart and it shows in her work. She not only strives to take care of the patient but also the patient's family. Without that quality, withstanding the stress of having your baby in a very unstable state would leave you yourself in an unstable state. It was always a good reminder I wasn't alone, Sarah gave me that reassurance daily.
Every morning Sarah was taking care of my baby I would walk in after scrubbing in and she would greet me with a smile and a good morning. I knew it was going to be okay that day. Whatever happened to my baby it was going to be okay because Sarah was going to do everything in her power and control to make sure he was okay as well as myself. I will never forget our time in the NICU and it won't be a memory full of fear and struggle. It will be a memory filled with love and hope because of special people like Sarah who are committed to a special purpose. Because of her heart, my heart is full. I will be forever grateful to Sarah and the entire staff of Mercy NICU.
