Recently, we had a staff member who lost his wife in untimely passing. We received the call from the staff's son to let us know that his father (one of our own RNs), won't be able to make it to work because of the event. As the devastating news was received, Sarah demonstrated the Swedish value of Compassion by thinking of her day shift colleagues. She paged the Spiritual Care the eve of knowing the news in anticipation of her colleagues in day shift hearing the news the following morning. She collaborated with the Spiritual Care department to assure a resource is available for her colleagues to support them through the grieving process. Sarah showed compassion and empathy to her colleagues. She exemplifies true, genuine caring. As nurses or those in the caregiving professions, we normally care for our patients and often forget that we too need to be cared for. Sarah made sure her colleagues were supported so they can be fully present to the patients they serve.
