Sarah Lehman, ASN, RN
There are moments when nursing rises beyond exceptional care and becomes something profoundly human. Today, that difference was made by Flex team RN, Sarah Lehman. Her skill, integrity, and compassion helped save our mother's life today.
Our mother faced a deeply personal, life-altering decision: whether to accept a blood transfusion in order to survive. Our mother is a Jehovah's Witness and has never had a critical situation such as the one she found herself in Thursday morning when the life squad brought her to the Baptist Beaches ER.
Sarah approached this moment with extraordinary respect and professionalism. She ensured that my mother was making the decision of her own free will, without pressure or influence. She carefully explained the risks and benefits in a clear, calm, and unbiased way, never steering her one direction or another, but honoring her autonomy with dignity and grace.
When questions arose, Sarah did not brush them aside or act rushed. Instead, she made sure the attending physician was consulted, took the time to clarify complex information, and stayed with us until we felt informed and supported. At no point did she make us feel like a burden or an interruption. Her presence communicated something rare and powerful; this mattered.
When my mother ultimately chose to proceed with the transfusion, Sarah continued to care for her with tenderness and unwavering attention. She treated my mother not just as a patient, but as someone she deeply cared about, like her own family. In a moment filled with fear and uncertainty, Sarah provided calm, reassurance, and trust.
My husband and I will never forget the way Sarah balanced clinical excellence with deep compassion. She advocated, protected my mother's dignity, and created a space where a life-saving decision could be made with confidence rather than fear.
Because of her actions, her integrity, and her heart, we feel peace that our mother is going to pull through. Sarah exemplifies everything the DAISY Award stands for. She is an outstanding role model whose compassion, ethical care, and commitment to patients leave a lasting impact. Our family will forever be grateful for her.
