She didn’t just provide excellent clinical care; she provided the kind of human connection that every nurse strives to give, but that not everyone can deliver so consistently.
My brother was diagnosed with stage 4 melanoma. As both his sister and a nurse myself, I know firsthand how overwhelming and frightening such a diagnosis can be, not just for the patient, but for the entire family.
In the middle of this incredibly difficult journey, Sarah became part of his care team through a clinical study, and she quickly revealed herself to be an extraordinary nurse and an angel in disguise.
My brother has always been more of a “glass half empty” type of person. He tends to focus on the difficulties and often struggles to see the bright side. But I watched Sarah completely change that perspective. With her calm presence, patience, and compassion, she was able to ease his anxiety, quiet his fears, and even bring out hope in him, something I honestly didn’t think I would see again. That transformation was nothing short of remarkable, and it speaks volumes about the impact she had on him as a person, not just as a patient.
From the very beginning, I noticed the way Sarah cared for him. She didn’t just provide excellent clinical care; she provided the kind of human connection that every nurse strives to give, but that not everyone can deliver so consistently. She spoke with clarity, ensured my brother understood what was happening at each step, and encouraged his questions. She treated him with dignity and respect, always meeting him where he was emotionally.
What touched me most was the way Sarah lifted his spirits during the darkest days. Sometimes it was with her gentle words, sometimes just by sitting with him and listening. As a nurse, I know how challenging it can be to balance clinical excellence with true compassion, and Sarah did this beautifully.
She also cared for our family in ways that went beyond her professional role. She reassured us, explained things with patience, and gave us the comfort of knowing he was in the very best hands. For me, as a sister, that meant more than I can express. As a nurse, I could see the rare gift she has—the kind of gift that embodies the very heart of our profession.
I will forever be grateful for the way Sarah walked alongside my brother and his wife during this journey. His journey is not over, and he has a long road ahead of him, but Sarah has made such an impression on him that he now has a different outlook.
She is an extraordinary nurse whose compassion, dedication, and humanity truly reflect the spirit of the DAISY Award.
