When my sister was admitted she was septic with pneumonia, DVT went off in her left leg putting PE blood in both lungs and then to her brain causing two strokes. Her kidneys were shut down, bleeding from the spleen. she was also on a ventilator and feeding tube. Doctors said she might not make it.
It was during this time that we met ICU nurse, Sarah Luthra. I've never met a nurse quite like her. Our family came to the hospital on different times each day. On this particular day after I talked to my sister's doctor, and he said she might not make it, I walked into her room and what I saw broke my heart. Sarah was sitting in a chair next to my sister's bed, stroking and holding her hand and talking to her. I lost it and started to cry. Sarah then heard me and she started to tear up with me, but she kept saying that "miracles can and do happen". She will make it through this. I have never seen a nurse do this before and Sarah didn't have too. It seemed like my sister's ordeal was never going to end. She was in the ICU for over 6 weeks. It seemed that she wasn't out of this, her kidneys started to shut down for the second time.
Sarah was always positive about my sister. Telling us stories of how other people have come out of these same conditions. Telling us "not to give up hope, that miracles do happen".
My sister was released and went to rehab then to a nursing home. While in the nursing home she developed a large blood clot in her leg which required a hospital stay back at Meriter. She was there for two days. During this second stay we don't know how, but Sarah had found out some way and she came to say "Hi" to her and see how she was. My sister didn't know her, but we sure did. My sister doesn't remember anything about this. Our family considers Sarah as her guardian angel. We feel without Sarah, she wouldn't have made it.
