On an incredibly busy morning with a full hospital and nowhere to send patients, there were 15 patients awaiting inpatient beds in the emergency department. When there are no beds within the hospital, these patients are then held in the emergency department with inpatient orders, until a bed becomes available or the patient is discharged. Keep in mind that at 7 am, the ER only has the staff available to maintain 17 beds for incoming patients (2 of these beds are under construction). Sarah volunteered her time to stay and help out in the emergency department. She had already completed a 12 hour night shift but was ready to stay and help in any way she could. Sarah took it upon herself to call the pharmacy, obtain all the medications needed for am meds, and completed the task in an incredibly timely manner. Sarah never once complained about the workload, the acuity, or the number of patients who required morning medications. She completed every task with a smile!! We could not be more thankful to Sarah, who stepped up on a day we truly needed the help.
