Without the positive reinforcement and gentle coaxing from the nurses and especially Sarah, he would have walked right out of your hospital never receiving the care he needed.
My father had been brought to the hospital three times in the last five weeks. While all employees have been kind, Sarah and the entire team stood out and truly exemplified the standard of caring for the "whole person". My father initially was going to be an outpatient, however, after the TAVR procedure, he required a pacemaker. It was hard for me to convince him he needed to stay because he is 85 years old and knows everything. However, without the positive reinforcement and gentle coaxing from the nurses and especially Sarah, he would have walked right out of your hospital never receiving the care he needed. Once he was dehydrated and all of his veins had collapsed, he was stuck multiple times to continue receiving blood. Sarah told him she would bring him ice cream and asked him what flavor to help the sticks. The doctor finally got the IV in and he enjoyed his strawberry ice cream. My father also has some early stages of dementia and they recognized that. Sarah always thoughtfully and carefully explained everything to my father and even recognized he was hard of hearing and made sure she communicated without screaming at him. I spent so much time at the hospital, waiting for surgeries, waiting for my father to wake up, and never once did anyone offer me something. I always brought a snack and a bottle of water, but Sarah and others on the floor asked me if I needed anything. They were as concerned for me as they were my dad. All of them were. I will always be grateful to Sarah and to this entire floor of nurses.
