I reluctantly came to the Emergency room during the start of the COVID-19 pandemic in late March. I was afraid that my kidney pain would expose me to the virus but the clinic could not provide the care I needed. I had envisioned a crowded room with everyone coughing. I had the impression everyone was in a state of panic, fear, and confusion. The staff made me feel like they had a map of calm, experience, and knowledge. It was purely one on one with a health care professional and it quelled my fears right from the start. Upon being assigned a bed in the emergency department, I was immediately greeted by the nurse Sarah Murphy. I realized she put me at ease in a very short time. She was on the front line and was professional and made me feel that she was truly concerned for my well being. She helped me as best as she could and explained everything to me. She was always there for me and after she assessed the situation we had a lighthearted conversation which put me at ease. She made me feel special. She treated me like gold. She even offered me a face mask for my protection if I wanted it. This was a day of insecurity for me during a pandemic and she not only was professional but made me feel comfortable. This is a time when all healthcare workers are heroes and I wish to let Sarah Murphy know she made a difference for me and I wish to thank her.
