I am delighted to nominate Sarah Whittington, as I find her to have all the qualities that make her an excellent nurse. She is intelligent, compassionate, and relentless in obtaining the best possible outcomes for her patients. She treats each one of her patients as if they were family members, even those who are difficult. She has the unique ability to unravel and troubleshoot while finding a solution. She is an advocate for her patients from the moment she arrives on duty until she leaves at the end of the day. She listens to her colleagues when they are having a difficult day, and they walk away knowing that she heard them and cares. She is meticulous and orchestrates her patients’ care by communicating with the necessary disciplines so that her patients will achieve the best outcome. She does all of this with a smile and an infectious upbeat attitude. She is always looking toward improving her skills and broaden her scope of practice. Everyone with whom she works praises her ability to create an environment that is collaborative, open, and welcoming. She treats everyone as equals and values the contribution of all staff equally. She leads by example, and she raises the level of care as a Public Health Nurse just by being herself. Sarah Whittington is the backbone of the Lawton Indian Hospital Public Health Nursing Department. She makes me proud to not only work beside her, but to work at the Lawton Indian Hospital. She deserves to be recognized for all she is and does for the Lawton Indian Hospital – Public Health Nursing Department, patients, her peers, and the nursing profession.
