I want to express my appreciation to the staff at the Gulf Coast Medical Center for the care I received while hospitalized in the 3S PCU Observation Unit. I especially want to thank the three nurses who not only demonstrated their exceptional skills with quiet competence but also for their calming bedside manner. Whenever I had a question, it was always met with a smile and a precise answer. Every time I requested a pillow, crackers or apple juice it was delivered at once. To my nightshift nurse, Sarah, who worked with quiet efficiency, I’d like to note her special gifts. She has a smile and a way of engaging with people that is open and genuine. When I asked her what she would be doing if she wasn’t a nurse, she said, “I never wanted to be anything other than a nurse.” That is dedication to her craft. When I couldn’t sleep, she came in and took the time for small talk, to explain things and engage in brief but interesting conversations that made me relax and focus on getting healthy again. Sarah reminded me of the nurses who cared for me in Vietnam. No matter how dark the future looked, a friendly, smiling nurse can turn things around and make you see the other side. Sarah is a special nurse who deserves credit and recognition for the contribution she makes to the Lee Health operation.
