Sarah is a Utilization Management Nurse (UM). The UM nurse’s role is one of the most important for nursing and patient care. She provides constant surveillance, advice, education, re-education, and support. She bases the information she provides on evidence-based practice. Often her job is not an easy one and she is frequently met by staff with attitudes of frustration and resistance, but those feelings quickly disappear as we acknowledge how extremely important UM is to patient care. The Utilization management nurse's role is to ensure that health care services are administered with quality, cost efficiency, and within compliance. By continuously reviewing and auditing patient treatment files the utilization nurse will ensure that patients won’t receive unnecessary procedures ineffective treatment or unnecessarily extensive hospital stays. The nursing staff is grateful to work with someone who is rich in UM experience and can problem-solve so that compliance is achieved. Her joy for her job and her enthusiasm are contagious. She can take an issue or concern pull the group together have a robust discussion about concerns and as a team, we are able to identify areas that need improvement and effectively implement the necessary change. Working with Sarah is a very positive experience for all of us. It is because of this relationship that Sarah has developed with every team member that makes us so effective and creates a dialogue that offers positive outcomes and safety measures for the patient and staff at our hospital.
