June 2026 Honoree
Sarah Parrish, LPN
I would like to formally nominate LPN Sarah Parrish from Cape Fear Valley Central Harnett Hospital for the DAISY Award in recognition of her extraordinary care, compassion, and professionalism during my recent hospitalization. I was admitted to the Emergency Department with multiple deep vein thromboses (DVTs) in my leg and dual pulmonary emboli. My condition was serious and life-threatening, and I remained in the ED for approximately 30 hours due to a lack of available inpatient beds. This was an extremely stressful and anxiety-provoking situation for both myself and my wife. From the beginning of her shift (7:00 PM to 7:00 AM), Sarah Parrish immediately stood out for her calm, confident, and reassuring demeanor. Her presence made a significant difference in helping me remain composed during a very frightening medical situation.
Throughout the night, Sarah demonstrated an extraordinary level of attentiveness. I never once needed to use the call button, because she proactively checked on me and my wife constantly, often multiple times per hour. Even after my wife left for the night, Sarah continued to check in frequently, making sure I had everything I needed.
One of the most impactful things she did was obtain a full-sized electric hospital bed from upstairs for me only a few hours into her shift. When the bed initially malfunctioned, she personally fixed it without needing to call a technician, ensuring I was comfortable as quickly as possible. She also identified and corrected issues with my care, including obtaining medications that had been missed or not ordered during the day shift. Her attention to detail and advocacy on my behalf ensured that my treatment continued without interruption.
What impressed me most was her ability to manage an overwhelming workload with grace. It felt as though she was doing the work of multiple staff members, yet she never appeared rushed or overwhelmed. Instead, she remained composed, kind, and fully present. At the end of her shift, Sarah stayed beyond her scheduled 7:00 AM departure time to thoroughly communicate my needs and status to the incoming day shift nurses. Her communication was clear, thorough, and ensured a seamless transition of care.
Sarah Parrish's bedside manner was truly exceptional. She treated me not just as a person, but as someone deserving of dignity, comfort, and reassurance during one of the most difficult experiences of my life. Her actions significantly reduced my anxiety and helped me feel safe and cared for during a critical medical event. Healthcare as a whole would greatly benefit from more nurses like Sarah Parrish.
