Sarah was caring, responsive, skilled, and knowledgeable.
When I saw this nomination form at the hospital on my way to visit my wife during her recent 11-day hospital stay, I immediately knew I would nominate Sarah. Sarah was caring, responsive, skilled, and knowledgeable. More specifically, my wife had been experiencing pain and discomfort during her pleural catheter draining, but Sarah was so skilled and responsive to her requests that she felt no discomfort during the draining.
At one point during her stay, my wife lost feeling in her right hand and began to slur her speech. I called Sarah, who came in immediately. She knew my wife so well, she instantly noticed that something was wrong and called in the rapid response team. At that point, she held my wife’s hand and calmly explained that there would be a lot of doctors and nurses coming in very quickly but not to be alarmed. She assured my wife that she did not believe my wife was having a stroke, but that she called the rapid response team out of an abundance of caution and to ensure she got the medical response she needed. Thankfully, it turned out to just be a calcium deficiency, and after a couple of bags of fluid, my wife was feeling better than she had in weeks.
I want to be clear that although Sarah’s care was exceptional, all of the nursing and non-nursing staff in oncology were fantastic. I’d like to thank Sarah and all of her colleagues for taking such expert care of my wife during a very long and arduous experience.
