It is very seldom you meet someone who was born to do the job they do. Well, let me tell you - my family and I did just that when we met Sarah. Our family was probably not much different than a lot of families. Just weeks before meeting Sarah, our mom was diagnosed with cancer and the best option for her is to undergo surgery to remove it. If the news from the cancer was not shocking enough, the referral to KU certainly was! You see, we come from small cities in Kansas and, for the most part, our family is healthy. The rare times we are in the hospital is if someone we know is having a baby or we need some antibiotics for a cold. Nothing major. Since we live quite a distance, one of the nurses will schedule as much testing in one day as they can (which we appreciate). Along with all the testing comes paperwork, paperwork and then more paperwork. Your nerves run high and the stress of it all is exhausting. It was our second visit for tests at KU when we met Sarah. We arrived at the cardiology unit and we had seen other nurses in the hospital that day. We weren't really paying much attention. After we waited, Sarah was the first person to come out and talk to us. I don't recall what she said; although I remember thinking to myself she is really nice. My sister and I patiently waited for mom to get finished with her tests. When mom was finished, Sarah was the one who brought her back to the waiting room. Sarah and mom continued to have a conversation and I remember Sarah saying she would check on mom at the time of her surgery. She wished us all well and we continued on with other visits for more tests. It was several hours later we found ourselves in another waiting room. Just when we were all about to lose it, Sarah walked in. I think at the time she was following up on another patient. Not only did Sarah come over and ask about our day, she even went to the back room to find out what was taking so long. After she did that, Sarah took the time to visit with me and my sister about stress and various other things while mom was finishing up her tests. Can you believe it? Neither could we! One the way home, we discussed the days events and I remember talking about how nice I thought Sarah was and I asked my sister and mom if they thought she would really check on mom during her surgery. It was our consensus she would be too busy and we would not see her again. I will not relay the details leading up to this particular day; let's just say that things did not go according to plan. It was the day after mom was scheduled for surgery. Mom was in the ICU. Our family was in the waiting room and had been for several hours. Who do you think walked in? I can't even type it without tears, it was Sarah. Once again, she talked to all of us and went back to find out about mom. She gave us her number and told to call if we need anything. Sarah followed up on us SEVERAL times during our stay. Sarah FOLLOWED UP LIKE SHE SAID SHE WOULD. She remembered my mom. She remembered our family. Mom was in the hospital for a lengthy stay, and it even came to pass that mom was blessed enough to get Sarah as her nurse for a few days. On a follow-up visit, Sarah was the first one to talk to us and she even took time out to help my mom with a pill bottle that was giving her trouble. The brochure for the DAISY Award asks you to share a specific story or describe how this nurse has made a difference' in the life of a patient. Sarah is someone we can count on. I know if any member of my family needed her, she would be there for them in any way she could. She helped us during our greatest time of need. She cares about my mom and she cares about us. As I said in the beginning, she was born to do this job. Let me tell you - IT SHOWS!! A simple thank you does not come close to the gratitude we have for Sarah. I truly believe Sarah is an angel and we were the ones blessed enough to come in contact with her.
