Sarah provided information and comfort when needed and made a lasting impression on the patient’s partner.
Sometimes being in the ICU is like riding a very fast roller coaster. A patient’s family member had that experience recently when their loved one was admitted with a pericardial effusion. An effusion around the heart can be treated pretty quickly- a quick trip to the cath lab for a drain and treat the underlying problem. Unfortunately for the patient, they were too unstable to wait for a transfer to the cath lab, and the procedure was done at the bedside. The team gathered and the drain was put in at the bedside. The scene was fast-paced and intense. During this time the family was supported by primary Nurse Sarah Shugan.
The family shared that the team worked continuously to save the patient. Sarah Shugan was nominated for the DAISY Award for her clinical expertise in caring for the patient as they arrived in critical condition. She was able to stabilize the patient with the help of the entire ICU team, but what Sarah was also able to do was provide care for the family during this crisis period. She provided information and comfort when needed and made a lasting impression on the patient’s partner. Through the ups and downs of that day, the family was kind enough to recognize Sarah Shugan.
