I was sent to labor and delivery with extremely high blood pressure at 28 weeks and diagnosed with sudden and severe preeclampsia. I was scared, unsure of what to expect as this was my first pregnancy. When they told me they would need to do an emergency c-section, I thought the worst. How would my daughter survive the NICU? I didn't get to meet my daughter until 14 hours after I had her. I was terrified, unaware of what to do, and didn't think she was in good enough hands because they weren't my own. Then came Sarah Smith. She introduced herself as my daughter's nurse. She told me how much she already saw so much fight and strength in my daughter. Still scared, looking around the room at all the sounds, screens and all the different cords and tubes attached to my daughter; Sarah recognized my fear and intimidation, she immediately started explaining everything on a level that I would understand. She dropped all the technical and medical terms and just encouraged me. She met me at that moment with such patience and kindness. Sarah made sure to let me know she wanted to watch my daughter thrive. She asked me about my family and got to know us and our story.
