April 2012 Honoree
sarah valerio dean, LVN
Sarah was nominated by her Nursing Director and her Nursing Manager:
Sarah was caring for a Spanish-speaking pt who indicated to her “corazon dolar.” Even though the patient did not appear to be in too much distress, Sarah immediately went into action. She immediately notified her charge nurse, requested a stat EKG, gave the pt an aspirin and NTG. They called the ACT FAST - Rapid Response Team and after the EKG showed changes indicating an MI, called the STEMI team. Within 15 minutes, the patient was going to the Cardiac Cath lab where he was found to have a 100% blockage of a vessel. Through Sarah’s quick response, listening to her patient, making good assessments, caring intervention and follow through, she made a difference to this patient, she helped to save his life.
