Sarah Stapleford Washek, Emergency Room RN was nominated by a patient whom was seen in the Emergency Room at Warren General Hospital back in March 2021. The patient wrote, “Modern day nurse theorist Jean Watson stated, “Caring is the essence of nursing.” I was home and ill. My workplace, upon testing me in the parking lot, confirmed-COVID 19 detected. It was very frightening, as an RN of almost 35 years, to have an asthma attack that led to the inability to speak and difficulty in breathing.” This patient then came to the ER at Warren General Hospital for treatment. The patient wrote, “Sarah graduated from WAHS, and the same grade as our oldest daughter. In such a friendly, professional and caring manner, she stated she was going to be my nurse. It was truly calming for me. She knows I am a nurse, but she did everything textbook. She informed and explained, while providing that care and compassion. I watched this young lady grow up and was now being blessed by her skills and knowledge base of the profession. Watson’s Theory of Human Caring includes that there can be caring moments/occasions. Caring moments provide meaning to our work as professional nurses.” The patient Thanked Sarah, for their caring moment they had between patient and nurse. During the Award celebration, the patient that nominated Sara was present and read her nomination letter during the celebration.
