Sarah cared for a patient who had been admitted in psychiatric crisis. The patient was autistic and experiencing significant sleep deprivation, which greatly increased his distress and the complexity of his situation. His parents remained at the bedside, deeply concerned and wanting the very best for their son.

During the night, the patient was awakened for an evaluation with the psychiatric team to determine next steps in the plan of care. Based on that late-night assessment, the recommendation was for inpatient psychiatric placement to adjust his medications.

However, after the patient was able to get a full night of sleep, he returned to his baseline the following day. Despite this clear improvement, the plan remained for inpatient psychiatric treatment. Recognizing the significant change in the patient’s condition, Sarah advocated for the psychiatric team to return and reassess him.

Through her advocacy, clinical insight, and unwavering dedication to her patient, Sarah ensured that the team reevaluated the situation. As a result, this young patient was spared a prolonged and potentially unnecessary separation from his home and family.

Sarah’s actions made a profound difference not only for her patient, but also for the entire family who had entrusted the team with their son’s care. Her compassion, attentiveness, and commitment to patient-centered advocacy truly embody the spirit of ethical nursing practice.

Thank you, Sarah, for your exceptional compassion, advocacy, and dedication to your patients. You truly make a difference.
